Options – A User’s Guide

An option is a contract giving the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specific price on or before a certain date. An option can be bought or sold and any number of these contracts can be combined to shape your equity exposure. Let's consider an option on the shares of a particular company. What is the difference between buying the option and the underlying asset?
